Considering medical student placements in your GP surgery?
We welcome interest in undergraduate teaching from practices at any time of year. We can arrange a meeting to discuss the opportunities available, and when the next round of recruitment will take place. The medical schools consider a “new practice” as one that is not teaching undergraduate medical students in this current academic year. The GP Sub Deanery recognises that some GP practices will have hosted medical students in previous years, but have been “fallow” for 1 year or more.

What is the process for a new practice?
1. Practice Visit
Our aim is for every new GP practice to have a GP Sub Deanery visit before they host medical students. The visit should be in person, and will assist the practice to make an informed decision. For details of the practice visit process itself, please visit our Practice Visits page.
On completion of the visit, the Sub Deanery will notify the medical school that a visit has been completed. The GP practice and the medical school will be emailed a copy of the visit report. *
2. Training for GP Tutor
At the end of the practice visit, a tailored plan will be provided. This will include guidance on mandatory training +/- a selection of resources depending on prior experience and learning needs.
Mandatory
A GP tutor from each practice is required to attend the essential tutor training for the respective University from which they will host students. This is the Annual Medical Educators Conference (for UU) or Annual GP Tutor meeting (for QUB). This allows for essential training in the delivery of the medical curriculum, an awareness of the learning outcomes of the programme and essential updates. If unable to attend the live event, then a GP tutor must engage with the respective Universities catch up activities.
All prospective GP Tutors should complete relevant Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training. This is the same training resource as required by NIMDTA and should be updated every 3 years. We strongly encourage the practice team to also access this free training.

- Peer mentoring – new tutors can be paired with an existing experienced tutor from a different practice for peer support.
- One-to-one support – Each medical school can offer further guidance.

3. Sign the Service Level Agreement (SLA)
Practices will be sent a Service Level Agreement (by the relevant medical school) before students are placed in the practice. They are required to review, sign and return it before the start of academic year. No payment for teaching can be made without a signed SLA in place.
