Current Undergraduate Teaching Practices

GP Placements provide medical students with opportunities to see the volume and scope of work that is done outside of a hospital setting. We want all students to have a high quality learning experience, whilst recognising that practices differ in many ways.
Our shared aim is “Promoting Excellence” in undergraduate GP placements using the GMC Guidance as our reference document.

 

From 1st September 2025, the CP2A form for GP Tutors in a practice setting will be issued by the GP Sub Deanery team. Click on the link in the box.

If you assist with teaching in the GP practice, but are not a named GP Tutor with the medical school, you do not need a CP2A for this role.

If you teach/work in other roles at a medical school e.g. OSCE examiner, MMIs, you can obtain a CP2A by clicking on the link to the relevant medical school at the base of this webpage.

      Excellence in General Practice Education

    The Robin Harland Award is presented at the GP Tutor Update event annually each September. It is nominated by medical students for excellence in teaching in General Practice.

    There are 5 staff award categories (enhancing potential, collaboration, inclusion, integrity and leadership) which can be awarded to any internal staff member or placement provider. Winners are invited to the end of year awards ceremony.

    How is Placement Quality measured?

    1. Student Placement Evaluation Questionnaires

    Student feedback is collected via anonymous placement evaluation questionnaires. The feedback is then reviewed within the medical schools, and any themes and actions identified. The majority of feedback is extremely positive. If there is a concern raised in the feedback, then a referral to the GP Sub Deanery may be made. The action required, and urgency, will depend on the nature of the feedback, and may range from further practice support, to potentially removing current and future students. One drawback is that feedback is not mandatory, and therefore it cannot be considered alone as a measure of quality.

    2. Direct Student Feedback During GP Placement

        • All students are encouraged to contact the GP Sub Deanery team through this website or by emailing info@gpsubdeanery.co.uk
        • UU Students are encouraged to report any issues in a timely manner using the School Educational incident form.
        • QUB Students are encouraged to report any issues in a timely manner using the procedure outlined on their Medical Education Portal.

    3. Practice Visits

    From 2025, all new practices to undergraduate teaching will have a practice visit before students are allocated to them. Current teaching practices will also be visited, but the timing will be dependent on need and issues as they arise.

    4. QUB Student Voice Committee (SVC)/UU Student Staff Consultation Committee (SSCC)

    Students are encouraged to raise any issues through their student representative at the relevant committee. Any concerns relating to a GP Placement are reviewed and addressed within the relevant medical school .

    5. Annual feedback report to GP Practice

    All GP practices receive a summary of the placement feedback provided by students who have been in the practice (this is shared by the relevant medical school on an annual basis and is anonymised).

    NOTE: If there are any issues of concern raised during a placement or immediately after, these are managed by the relevant medical school at that time.

    6. GP Tutor CP2A

    NIMDTA has provided clear guidance as to what a GP “Tutor” is for the purpose of needing a CP2A. You can find the document within the appraisal section of the NIMDTA website, titled “List of Roles Where Form CP2A May Be Required” or download directly from below.

    All GP tutors should request a CP2A form for their work in teaching medical students.

    From 1st September 2025 the process for requesting a CP2A changed. The GP Sub Deanery will be managing all requests for a CP2A for GP Tutors in a practice setting for either medical school or both.

    If you assist with teaching in GP practice, but are not a named GP Tutor with the medical school then you do not need a CP2A.

    For any other roles such as OSCE examiner, clinical teaching in the medical school, or interviews, the CP2A should be requested from the relevant medical school.
